Refreshed ISOs for Asmi Linux v24.04.2 are now available with Xfce 4.20 and Linux kernel 6.11 .
What’s New
Xfce Desktop 4.20
This ISO includes the Xfce 4.20 desktop, which features a good number of fixes and improvements compared to Xfce 4.18. For more details, please read my previous article.
You can switch back to Xfce 4.18 using the Asmi Settings app. There are 2 options on the Tools page to downgrade or upgrade the Xfce desktop version.
The desktop now uses one of the Xfce community wallpapers. The default layout was also changed to a windows-like layout that has the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. This change was made since this is the layout that most beginners to Linux are comfortable with.
You can easily change the layout using the Asmi Settings app which will open automatically on the first login.
Linux Kernel 6.11
Asmi 24.04.2 includes the Ubuntu HWE kernel which is currently at version 6.11. This provides better support for newer processors, graphics cards, and other hardware compared to the Ubuntu LTS kernel (v6.8) that Ubuntu 24.04 was initially released with.
Asmi Settings
The Asmi Settings app has been improved. There’s a new page for switching to another kernel, like Ubuntu LTS, Ubuntu HWE, Zen (Liquorix), or XanMod. Click the ‘Apply’ button to install the selected one and remove all others.
There’s a new Tools page with some useful tools and scripts.
Previous releases of Asmi had two ISOs:
- A “mini” ISO without any pre-installed apps (~1.8 GB)
- A “full” ISO with recommended apps (~2.5 GB)
Now there is a single ISO that is similar to the “mini” ISO but includes Firefox, Variety, Nemo, and Celluloid from the “full” ISO. The ISO is 2 GB in size which is a decent middle-ground between the “mini” and “full” versions.
There’s a new page in the Settings app for installing recommended software.
Asmi Indicator
The Asmi Indicator app has been improved. The menu items are more clearly labelled. New actions were added for opening Asmi Settings and Xfce Settings Manager.
The wallpaper changer now has options to save the current wallpaper to favourites folder.
Asmi Repository
There’s a new repository available for this distribution. This provides updates for apps like Asmi Settings and Asmi Indicator which are installed on the ISO.
If you are using a previous release of Asmi 24.04, you can add/remove the repository by running the following commands in a terminal:
Install:
wget -O - https://packages.teejeetech.com/install-asmi-repo-noble.sh | bash
Uninstall:
wget -O - https://packages.teejeetech.com/uninstall-asmi-repo-noble.sh | bash
Other Changes
- The Status Tray plugin is buggy and has been replaced with Indicator plugin for all layouts.
- xfce4-panel-profiles will be used to apply layout changes instead of using custom code
- Add Firefox, Nemo, Variety, Celluloid
- Use Xfce community wallpaper
- Add Previous and Next buttons to panels for changing wallpapers using Variety.
- Settings: Storage: Automount USB devices by default
- Settings: Gtk4: Use ‘gl’ renderer instead of ’ngl’.
